Hey photographers! We all know you need to create a solid presence for yourself on social media (In particular Facebook, Instagram, and even Pinterest). Social media is the PERFECT place to showcase your work to the world (and ultimately help bring new clients to your business).
But before you start creating social media content, I think it’s important for you to define (both for yourself and for your overall marketing strategy):
- Who are YOU?
- What is your niche? (travel photography, headshots, family portraits, weddings?)
- What makes you different from other photographers in your niche?
Being clear about your brand and what you offer specifically as a photographer is the first step to creating social media content that pops.
Got it? Awesome. But what kind of things should you be posting about? What content could you create that isn’t just the same-old posting of your latest shoot?
Here are 5 industry-specific content ideas
1. Storytelling
A stunning photo is great, but what makes a social media post great is not only a stunning image but also the STORY behind it. For example, everyone loves a beautiful engagement shoot. But sharing the story of how the lucky couple met and fell in love takes your social media post to a whole new level. Watch your engagement rates go up! (Social media engagement rates, not wedding engagement rates) 😉
2. Give customer tips – show you care
One way to give value is to post tips for a good shoot. For example – Are you a boudoir photographer? Share tips on how your client can feel more comfortable and relaxed on the day. Are you a portrait photographer? Share tips on how a family can get ready for their shoot.
3. Position yourself as an authority
Share facts on what makes a good photograph great and/or how you make your photos stand out from the rest. What makes the perfect engagement photo? Maybe some information to do with lighting? Setting? Equipment? You don’t need to get overly technical, but just enough to show you kinda know what you’re talking about/doing! You could turn these facts into some blog posts and share them to your social media channels as well.
4. Utilise Instagram
Facebook is a great place to start, but are you utilizing the glorious possibilities of a beautiful Instagram feed? You should be! Instagram is a photographer’s best friend due to its visual nature. Curate a feed that is on-brand and consistent in look and utilise Stories. Check out this blog post for more Instagram tips.
5. Try collaborations and/or giveaways
Collaborate with other businesses within your niche or industry. For example, wedding photographers could collaborate with jewellers, makeup artists, or wedding venues. Boudoir photographers could collaborate with a lingerie store and do a giveaway package. Headshot photographers could collaborate with a suit hire shop, offering clients business attire to go with their new headshots. Use your creativity!
